ABOUT ALS CANADA
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, is a devastating neuromuscular disease. ALS is sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease after the legendary New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig who lost his battle with ALS at age 38. Death typically occurs from respiratory failure within two to five years of diagnosis. There is no known cause for ALS, and to date, no known cure. Research is our only hope. ALS Canada funds research towards a cure for ALS and supports Provincial ALS Societies in their provision of quality care for persons living with ALS.
ABOUT CANADIAN CARDIAC REHABILITATION FOUNDATION
Founded in 1965 as the Marina Lodge, the CCRF is a charitable organization that is dedicated to raising funds for cardiac rehabilitation programs, research and preventative education. Dr. Terence Kavanagh developed his unique exercise based cardiac disease rehabilitation program in 1968, which has saved the lives of hundreds of thousands Canadians suffering from heart disease for 40 years. Over that time, the CCRF has raised over $8 million for facilities, patient education, research, scholarships and equipment.
Heart disease is still the number one cause of premature death in Canada, killing 80,000 Canadians and costing Canadian health systems $18.5 billion each year. An aging population, smoking, poor diet and a decreasing physical activity are contributing factors to heart disease. Increasingly, it is the lack of physical activity that is causing poor heart health in Canadians. This is most apparent in youth, whose physical inactivity is putting them at increased risk for heart disease. In fact, this is the first generation of Canadians who may not outlive their parents.
CROHN’S AND COLITIS FOUNDATION OF CANADA
CCFC is a charitable foundation dedicated to the support of research that will find the cure for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Known nationally and globally as a world leader in non-governmental funding of IBD research, CCFC is committed to stimulating and revolutionizing the research agenda. The pursuit of a cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis is an exciting journey, made possible by the partners that travel the path with CCFC. Together, we will “Find the Cure.”
